Surreal Humor in Today’s Society

Olivia Bradley, Staff Writer

All over the internet you’ll find these things called ‘memes’ , some are old and some are new but what we are looking for in this article are the newest memes on the market. Surreal humor and art has been around for countless generations, most notably seen in the painting ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch. In today’s society however, this humor is not represented in art anymore, well if you want to count memes as art then go ahead. By googles definition surreal humor is “a form of humor predicated on deliberate violations of causal reasoning, producing events and behaviors that are obviously illogical. Constructions of surreal humor tend to involve bizarre juxtapositions, incongruity, non-sequitur, irrational or absurd situations and expressions of nonsense”. The basic meme, though is just an inside joke, nothing more nothing less, but with surreal memes its a whole different joke that only some truly get.

Meme Man is the primary character in a lot of these jokes, sometimes there’s just an orange with legs, or something else just as bizarre. Some people think these memes are the future and try to read them as much as possible, but literally it’s just a meme. Surreal memes have indeed come a long way, but they are undergoing what is considered ‘normal’, what is a normal you ask? Well the answer is, they are just basic people with basic minds that can’t comprehend comedy and try to replicate it, but to no avail.
