Dark Souls is a video game with swords and magic and dragons. But it’s not your typical fairy tale. As the name suggest, there is a dark twist to the story. This game is famously known for its difficulty and complexity as there are thousands of items from weapons to shields to armor to simple mosses and every item has a tiny piece of the puzzle that is this games hidden lore.

To try to explain the lore, its best to start where the game itself does. The beginning of everything. It states that first there was nothing but a great fog with arch trees(massive trees hundreds of feet thick) and everlasting immortal dragons. Then a flame appeared and with the flame came light and dark, heat and cold, and most importantly, life and death. When the flame appeared, beings came and found what are called Lord Souls within the flame. There are 4 main lords. Nito the first of the dead, Lord Gwyn father of sunlight with his loyal knights, The Witch of Izalith and her daughters of chaos, and the Furtive Pygmy, so easily forgotten. Each of these, more so Gwyn and the Furtive Pygmy, will have an article of its own and have in theories that I personally believe are true based on the information I have gathered.

For now we its best to start braudly on the events as the game takes place. First there was just the fog, dragons, and arch trees, then fire appeared and lord souls came from them. Then they each went their separate ways for a little while until Gwyn and the other lords declared war on the everlasting dragons. Nito released a miasma of death and disease which crippled the scales of the dragons. The Witch of Izalith and her daughters of chaos weaved great fire storms. And Gwyn and his loyal knights threw great bolts of sunlight called sunlight spears(basically zeus but yellow). The Furtive Pygmy at this point is MIA. The main combatant for the dragons was Gwyn and his allies. He rewarded his allies using “Bequeathed Lord Souls Shards.” Meaning that he split a shard of his own lord soul and gave it to his allies. There were 2 entities that got his lord souls shards,  1 was a group of greedy corrupt kings simply known as the 4 kings, I will go into them more later. The other was a scaleless dragon who out of jealousy and lust for knowledge, betrayed his own and revealed that scales were the source of the dragons of the dragons immorality(changed the tide of the war). The war is over and the gods (gwyn and his children) are dominating. With the city of Anor Londo, the world goes into the age of fire. Eventually the fire(literally, referring to the flame that started it all) begins to fade, and the gods abandon Anor Londo. In a desperate attempt to postpone the end of the age, Gwyn sacrifices his soul into the fire thus rekindling the flame. This is the story from which the game begins. There is much to go into about all that is mentioned like the creation of demons and 4 kings but they will have to wait.

Much is unknown about the dark souls timeline and the whole game itself is clouded in mysteries. I’ve spent hundreds of hours playing the game and still don’t know everything about the story. There are gaps left to us to fill in with our own theories and explanations and if you disagree with what I say I would be happy to have a friendly debate it with you.
